School is out and vandalism and theft is on the rise in many gated and un-gated communities. A percentage of crimes reported are just acts of vandalism and some of the crimes are theft of property. Remember, a thief has a job just like you do; just theirs is preying on what you own. Thieves work diligently to do a good job in their profession and unfortunately, many are very successful. Your local police urge you to do the following during this period and during the course of everyday life.

VEHICLES
1. Park your cars in your garage.
2. If you must park in your driveway or the street, lock all valuables in the trunk and keep NOTHING visible in the vehicle.
3. If your vehicle is not in the garage, lock your car doors.
4. Keep your garage doors closed unless you are working in the garage.

SECURITY
1. Activate your security alarm when you are home AND when you leave the home.
2. DO NOT place outgoing mail in your mailbox-this will prevent identity theft and criminals from "washing" an outgoing check and entering their name.
3. Be sure that your motion sensor lights are working; change the bulbs.
4. If you have surveillance cameras; keep them on 24/7.
5. If you are not home by 5pm to bring in your garbage can, have a neighbor bring it up to your home. At mid-day thieves are looking for "signs" of an empty home.

VACATION
1. Do not post on Facebook that you are on vacation!
2. Be sure that you have lights on a timer for the interior of your home.
3. If you do not have one; install a timer for your outside lights ($25 at Lowes, ACE, Home Depot, etc).
4. Stop your mail and your newspaper deliveries.
5. Have a neighbor take your occasional leaflets left on your door or ones that are thrown in the driveway. Potential thieves will throw a newspaper in a driveway as a way of "fishing" to see if someone picks it up.
6. Install "Door Knob Covers" on the inside of your interior doors. If a thief braeks a window to turn the handle, the know slows them down.
